When using 3G connections, why waste your quota with Windows Update downloads? The solutions is rather simple: define your 3G connection as a Public Network (the one with the bench). In your Windows Firewall, first disallow all traffic for Public Networks.

Then create individual rules for the programs you want to use, i.e. Firefox, Internet Explorer, VPN software and Outlook. Done! You can now access the web via 3G and be sure that only wanted traffic uses your quota.
